We are here in Southern California and the weather right now is, to say the least, odd. There is no moisture in the air, it is warm (for January), and the Santa Ana winds are whipping. My lips are chapped and I use moisturizer all the time. However, these conditions create a perfect storm for acne prone skin. All of a sudden, you chap up and have dry and acne prone skin. This doesn’t just have to happen when the weather creates certain dry conditions, it can happen because of the products we use. I know, you think if you can just dry out your skin enough, the oily acne will go away. Then you find yourself in the same predicament, dry and acne prone skin.
This is a bad place to be in because, strangely enough, when you dry out really oily skin a bit, some of that acne does abate. Yet, your skin suffers. You may know how you got here, you may not but now you are asking yourself, “Now what? What do I do with this dry and acne prone skin? I don’t want to make either symptom worse. So, what do I put on my skin?”
Products to ease dry and acne prone skin:
- A good probiotic cleanser: You heard me right. Probiotics on your face. There are a couple good ones at your local health food store. You can get them both in bar form and in a richer cleanser. I know you are paranoid about your skin breaking out worse than it is. If so, go with the bar. If you can take a leap of faith with your dry and acne prone skin, reach out for the cleanser.
- Oil Free Moisturizer: You need a moisturizer. Try one that has a bit of tea tree oil (it is not like an oily oil at all) or a bit of salicylic acid. Another option is using straight Aloe Vera Gel. It is healing and moisturizing.
- Wash and Moisturize Day and Night: Go to Costco and get yourself a million wash cloths. Wash with warm water and use a new one EVERY time you wash your face. You don’t want to contaminate your face with bacteria from an old wash cloth. The wash cloth will provide the gentle exfoliation you need.
Dry and acne prone skin is a nightmare because the solution to one problem seems to make the other worse. However, this plan will help you through this tough time and lead you into lovely, moisturized skin!
